Home is the beautiful Far North of New Zealand - full of dusty roads, beautiful people, endless beaches and a huge sky. Where I live and what I see on a day to day basis has an influence on subject matter I paint. Other influences include global warming, deforestation, a love of birds and animals, and - being exporters - the regimentation of industry, exchange rates, logistics, and the promotion of New Zealand products in foreign market places. Guess you could say - daily life.
The creative process
I start a painting by playing with paint in colours that attract me on that particular day. Marks are made, the canvas is turned, the evolving image viewed up close and from a distance. Eventually a subject matter evolves and emerges. It often reflects where I’ve been, what I’ve seen and heard, and sights and senses of everyday life. Something bubbles to the surface and demands to be painted.
