Here's the opening introduction -
Traditional artists require a posed model, a seat in the landscape to capture the view or a staged still life with manipulated lighting. They're trained to look and copy what they see in front of them, following time-honoured methods and rules. This book encourages you to paint what can't be posed formatted or photographed.
In the Abstraction chapters, we'll explore the first steps. How to begin, the no subject matter approach, gestural and rhythmic mark-making, finding which way is up, the selection process and how to further develop it.
Moving on to Expressionism we'll explore not the physical form before us, but the sound, the aroma, the atmosphere felt at the time. Can you paint a reaction to a favourite poem, music, a conversation or anything and everything that's important in your life?
That will lead to Contemporary art. Using both Abstraction and Expressionism techniques let's tease your power of recollection, release issues foremost in your mind, express your view on private, regional or worldwide events that give joy or concern. If ever there was a great place to express yourself, Contemporary art has got to be right up there. Inspiration doesn't stop when you walk away from the easel, everyday life presents opportunities, waiting to be put onto paper.
View examples of work created in the three categories. We’ll look at how they began, what techniques were chosen, and what inspired their creation. This illustrates how commonplace subject matter can be, and where you might find your own. You just have to recognise it.
If you’re a beginner who hasn’t been taught to paint, Welcome. This is a great place to start. Such an opportunity to jump right in there and get painting now, not later. This will be an exciting, addictive time for you.
If you’re a traditional painter, how will you benefit?
Your work will become loose, more spontaneous, and full of new subject matter. There’ll be more of your view of life. You will not be copying what’s before you. Stand in a field to paint a landscape but leave the paints at home together with your sketch pad. Bask in the sun, smell the grass, hear the birds. Become saturated in senses. Then express that scene in your home studio. You know how to apply paint, you know about hue, tone, value and composition. Relax and simply experiment with the pure pleasure of finding subject matter from within.
If you’re not a painter but have an interest in the arts, buy an original now and again, or are a full-time collector, this book will give you insight into the world of the artist. Where the ideas may have originated, why those brushstrokes were made, why those colours Enter the world, of the artist.
